Carollo Engineers announces Bryant L. Bench scholarship recipient

$10,000 awarded to student pursuing water engineering career

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., June 24, 2020 — Carollo Engineers, Inc., recently announced the recipient of its 2020 Bryant L. Bench scholarship. The annual award provides $10,000 to a graduate student pursuing an engineering degree with a passion for providing innovative solutions to the world’s water challenges.

This year’s scholarship honors Charlie Liu, a doctoral student studying environmental engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. Charlie’s research focuses on the design, construction, and operation of pilot treatment systems for highly recalcitrant per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). A natural leader, Charlie firmly believes in creating opportunities to better others. As the 2018 President of the Mines Student Chapter of AWWA/WEF, he hosted a student conference that gave graduate students valuable opportunities to present their research and network with industry experts.

In partnership with the American Water Works Association, the Bryant L. Bench scholarship was established in honor of Carollo Engineers’ Water Practice Director, Bryant Bench, who combined elegant engineering with innovative treatment concepts to improve drinking water quality for millions of people across the country.

“Bryant left an enduring legacy on the water industry—in his treatment solutions and through the many lives that he touched,” said Jim Hagstrom, Carollo Executive Vice President. “Bryant was a mentor and teacher with a passion to help others grow in their careers and personal lives. We are honored to present this scholarship to Charlie and hope that it will continue to inspire others to excel like Bryant inspired others to do.”

Charlie was honored during AWWA’s Virtual Scholarship Recognition Event on June 22. Among the attendees at the virtual ceremony were AWWA Michelle Hektor, Sr. Manager of Development & Donor Relations; Carollo Engineer Ryan Bench; (Bryant’s son); and Carollo Research Practice Director, Jess Brown. Carollo’s scholarship selection committee was comprised of Jess Brown, Ryan Bench, Chris Cleveland, and Tom Gillogly.
