Sustainability Assessments

Sustainability is not a single solution but a thoughtful process that shapes every stage of infrastructure planning and delivery. As utilities manage aging systems, changing regulations, and increasing climate risks, they must weigh long-term social, environmental, and economic outcomes. Without clear strategies, sustainability goals can be overshadowed by short-term decisions. Carollo helps utilities apply structured frameworks that guide project teams toward responsible and future-ready solutions. By embedding sustainability into planning, design, and implementation, utilities can deliver infrastructure that not only meets today’s needs but also supports the health and resilience of future generations.

Envision® Sustainability Framework and Rating System

We apply the Envision framework to assess infrastructure sustainability, identify design improvements, and guide projects toward Envision certification for enhanced community, environmental, and economic outcomes.

Decision Support for Sustainable Design

We assist clients with demand and flow projections, development analysis, long-term project phasing, and rate development. Carollo’s big picture perspective can provide a long-term plan that works.

Triple Bottom Line / Multi-Criteria Evaluation

We evaluate project alternatives using decision-framing tools that balance financial, social, and environmental considerations, helping clients select the most sustainable and cost-effective solutions.

Environmental Justice Assessments

We analyze how projects impact vulnerable communities to promote equitable outcomes that align with social responsibility and regulatory goals.

Keeping Long-Term Impact on the Forefront

Carollo’s sustainability assessments empower utilities to address today’s challenges while planning for a resilient future. We help utilities integrate sustainable thinking into every phase of a project so that decisions reflect a balance of environmental, social, and economic priorities. Our team applies the established Envision® framework to guide design choices, evaluate performance, and identify opportunities for improvement. We also use tools such as multi-criteria analysis and triple bottom line assessments to help clients weigh trade-offs and maximize value. The result is infrastructure that delivers lasting benefits to both communities and the environment.

Envision®

Envision is a sustainability framework designed to guide infrastructure projects toward more resilient, community-focused, and environmentally responsible outcomes. Developed by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI), Envision provides project teams with a structured path to assess long-term social, economic, and environmental performance. The system encourages collaboration and holistic thinking throughout planning, design, and construction, rewarding projects that go beyond basic compliance. Carollo uses Envision to evaluate and enhance water infrastructure projects, whether helping clients pursue formal certification or offering early assessments to identify sustainable design opportunities. Our team can lead the Envision verification process and help position projects for award-level recognition.
