While the technology behind water recycling is well established, the path to public understanding hasn’t always kept pace. That’s why Carollo created The ABCs of Water Reuse, a new illustrated guide designed to simplify key water reuse concepts and support more effective public communication.
A recent article published by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) highlights this new resource and the role it plays in helping utilities and public officials explain how water recycling works and why it’s essential to sustainable water management.
Making Water Reuse Concepts Easy to Understand
The ABCs of Water Reuse uses an A-to-Z format to introduce 26 fundamental terms, such as “aquifer,” “membrane,” and “indirect potable reuse”, through storytelling, metaphors, and colorful illustrations. As Diana Leonard, Carollo’s director of communications, explains in the article, “The technical terminology created unnecessary barriers.” The book’s goal, she says, is to “bridge the gap between advancing technology and the public appetite for it.”
A Tool for Water Reuse Education and Engagement
This ready-to-use resource is intended for utilities, elected officials, and outreach professionals who need to communicate clearly with their communities. Whether it’s used during facility tours, school visits, public meetings, or board presentations, The ABCs of Water Reuse is designed to start conversations and support greater understanding of water reuse’s role in long-term water resilience.
“Our end goal is to help support and advance public understanding, acceptance, and adoption of water recycling and reuse,” Leonard says. “This isn’t a profit-driven product—it’s a tool created to give back to the industry and help communities imagine what’s possible when we use every valuable drop more than once.”
