For decades, utilities have struggled to connect the public with the benefits of water reuse. The concepts are technical, the terminology unfamiliar, and building trust takes more than simply explaining the process. That’s why clear, creative communication is critical, and why Carollo’s The ABCs of Water Reuse is making waves.
In a recent episode of the Streaming Water podcast, host Blair Corning sat down with Carollo’s Diana Leonard, director of communications, and John Rehring, senior client services manager, to discuss how the book came to life, what makes it effective, and how it’s helping utilities bring communities into the conversation.
An Educational Tool for Building Public Understanding of Water Reuse
Originally created for a Southern California public event, The ABCs of Water Reuse uses an A–Z format to explain 26 water reuse concepts—from aquifers to zero wasted water—in clear, engaging language. As Diana explained, the goal was to bridge “the gap between complex engineering topics and public understanding,” making it a resource that utilities can use at events, groundbreaking ceremonies, and tours.
The book is intentionally designed for non-engineers, featuring concise explanations, relatable metaphors, and bold pop-art illustrations. John noted that this approach helps demystify highly technical concepts, such as “log removal,” by using everyday comparisons that make them easier to grasp.
Why Community Engagement Matters in Water Reuse
Both Diana and John emphasized that community support is essential for advancing water reuse projects. John described it as a “social license” that must be earned through transparency, early engagement, and clear communication. Diana added that the book also equips key messengers, such as elected officials and city leaders, with language they can use to advocate for projects.
By combining technical accuracy with approachable storytelling, The ABCs of Water Reuse helps build understanding and trust, both of which are critical factors in gaining public acceptance of purified recycled water as a safe and sustainable supply.
Making Complex Water Reuse Topics Engaging and Accessible
To keep readers turning the pages, the team infused the book with vibrant visuals, a touch of humor, and creative page designs. Each letter is a conversation starter, whether it’s “D is for Drink It” or “I is for Indirect Potable Reuse,” described simply as taking “the scenic route through nature.” The result is a resource that is as enjoyable to look at as it is to read.
